In the area known as the "Valley of the Sun," Tempe, which has a population of approximately 168,200 people, is one of the special places. The city was founded in 1871, making it older than the state of Arizona, however, the median age of residents in Tempe is only 28 years of age! It is considered to be a hip place and there is a cache to being in Tempe, whether for employment, entertainment or to live. In the Downtown area, near the ASU campus, there is a large selection of diverse restaurants, night clubs and microbreweries to explore.
Tempe is one of the major suburbs of Phoenix. In addition to being just to the east of Phoenix, it is bordered by Scottsdale, Mesa and Chandler. The Tempe Tourism Office website says Tempe covers 39.62 square miles...and, Tempe has 330 days of sunshine every year...with an average temperature of 83.5 degrees. Not only is it a popular place to live, but it is a great place to visit. Providing convenient access to and from the surrounding areas are freeways, which include Highway 60 (Superstition Freeway), Interstate 10, and the newer Loops 101 and 202. Sky Harbor International Airport is an easy ten minute drive from Tempe. Getting to downtown Phoenix is also a quick 20 minutes or so by car. Traveling around Tempe has been made easier by the Orbit Bus connections between residential locales and other local amenities like main bus routes, shopping, schools, etc. Also of help in moving about the Metro area is the light rail train system which allows parking off campus and low cost tickets to the campus. The light rail also provides service to the other areas of the MetroPlex, including downtown Phoenix.
Tempe is home to Arizona State University, ASU has four campus locations in the Metro area, with a total enrollment, according to ASU, of 76,771 students (as of early 2015). The ASU main campus, in Tempe, has 62,599 students, one of the largest public universities in the United States. ASU is in the PAC-12, a very competitive sports conference, so attending any of the sports activities allows the spectator to see competition at a high level! The Grady Gammage Memorial Auditorium, designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, on the Arizona State University campus provides a great venue for a variety of entertainment.
Tempe does parks well!
- Kiwanis Park is a large park, about 125 acres. It has fun playgrounds with all of the exciting equipment any child would want, as well as an urban lake that is stocked with fish. Several armadas can be reserved for special events. The park also has 15 tennis courts, an indoor wave pool, fitness center, gym, baseball diamonds, soccer fields, volleyball courts and a batting range. This is a popular attraction and such a large park that it maintains a very relaxed feel.
- Tempe Town Lake is a newer attraction, opening in 1999. The lake is approximately 2 miles in length and holds over 975 million gallons of water, with an average depth of about 12 feet. Tempe Beach Park is the city's oldest park, dating back to 1931. This 25 acre park was restored to coincide with the opening of the Tempe Town lake in 1999.
