Mesa is the third largest city in Arizona, right after Phoenix and Tucson. It is a suburb, located approximately 20 miles to the east of central Phoenix. The city of Mesa is bordered by Tempe to the west, the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the north, Apache Junction on the east and Gilbert & Chandler to the south. The 2010 U. S. Highway 60 (Superstition Freeway) runs through Mesa east and west. The Loop 101 is a north/south freeway on the west side of the city and the Loop 202 is an east/west freeway on the north portion of the city curving south in east Mesa to meet with Highway 60.
The average annual temperature checks in at 84.5 degrees Fahrenheit. Boasting 313 days of sunshine per year, it comes as no surprise that Mesa has quite a few golf courses, with convenient access to each. However, as wonderful as golf is in Mesa, Arizona, it is also the host to the Cubs Major League Baseball Spring Training. The Cubs home games are played at Sloan Park. Other MLB teams also practice in the Metro Phoenix area, and play Spring Training games in a league known as the Cactus League. Pitcher & catcher workouts start on February 19th this year, full squad workouts start February 25th and the games run through March. Regular Season Opening Day this year is April 5th, when the Cubs will play the Cardinals. Spring Training has been a seasonal pleasure in the Phoenix Metro Area since 1947.
Regarding educational opportunities, Mesa has the east campus of Arizona State University, Mesa Community College and East Valley Institute of Technology.
The Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is located in Mesa and handles passenger service, providing an alternative to flying out of Phoenix Sky Harbor, and offers flights to 35 destinations, according to their website.
Mesa has been selected as the location for a new facility for a major, global company. On February 2, 2015, Apple announced that it will be investing $2 billion to build its data center in Mesa. This new center is associated with the company's worldwide networks. Apple reportedly said this will be one of the largest investments to date. Construction is scheduled to begin in 2016.
